Our world is insanely complex - sometimes it's hard for us to even consider all relevant factors, let alone include them.
Our first thought is: Online shopping is not sustainable and bad!
We have dealt a bit with the topic and want to take you on a little excursion! 💡
Brick-and-mortar retail is good and at the same time important - we also work with many retailers! Nevertheless, a store must be air-conditioned all year round and supplied with electricity. Products are usually delivered in packaging, unpacked and prepared for sale. (cf. Source 1)
Many drive by car for a small shopping trip. It should be noted here that a car trip of 3 kilometers roughly corresponds to the CO2 consumption of a parcel shipment. This point is especially relevant for those who live a bit rurally & have to drive to the next city by car. (cf. Source 2)
"While the fuel consumption of a delivery vehicle on a daily 50-kilometer route in the city, for example, is distributed over 150 packages, a similar fuel consumption also occurs for a Saturday shopping trip to the nearest city center. The difference is that the CO2 emissions of the private shopping trip only occur for the shopping pleasure of a few people. In the future, emissions per package could even decrease further, as Deutsche Post is currently converting its vehicle fleet to electrically powered Streetscooters, which operate without CO2 and noise emissions." If you live in the countryside, it definitely makes sense to order online. If that is not the case & you still prefer to order on the internet, we have collected a few ideas here.
- use sustainable search engines - we can recommend Ecosia
- shop consciously - do you really need that?
- avoid returns - they are a real killer for the ecological balance
- Bulk order instead of many small ones - maybe your friends need something too?
- Delivery to the parcel shop - for example, avoids double delivery
- Support companies that produce regionally & fairly
- Support companies that pay their employees fairly
And what is ultimately very important: lots of fun shopping, peeps! <3
